After Egypt, now Ajazair

About a thousand people demonstrated anti President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in Algeria's capital, Algiers, Saturday, February 12, 2011. The demonstration was held the day after the people of their neighboring countries, Egypt, celebrating the resignation of President Housni Mubarak.

According to The New York Times, the demonstrators in the Field May 1 compact shouted, "Bouteflika resign!" Power since 1999, Bouteflika accused the opposition always manipulate the election results to continue in power.

The Guardian newspaper revealed that the demonstrations last weekend were also demanding the government lift the emergency status, which have been in effect for 19 years. They also demanded guaranteed democratic freedoms, and want a change of political system in Algeria.

Inspired by a wave of demonstrations in Egypt, the demonstrators also shouted, "Yesterday, Egypt, Algeria Today." In recent days, Algeria hit by anti-government protests, but not sedahsyat happened in Tunisia and Egypt. In addition to the large mass involved, the action in the two countries successfully subvert the long-ruling leader.

The Algerian government actually forbids citizens to demonstrate. However, the appeal was ignored the demonstrators. So, in yesterday's action had been a clash between police and protesters, although not reported any casualties.
